Over Memorial Day weekend Charlie and I went over to Walt’s Bike Shop and bought me a bike. I’ve never been into biking, and when the guy at Walt’s had me take a test drive in the parking lot I was soon reminded that I hadn’t ridden a bike regularly since I was 8.

So how did this all happen? My work is helping chaperone a classroom of seventh-graders from Kansas City as they bike the entire Katy Trail. I signed up to go along for one day, and was soon on board to do a 38 mile ride. And I didn’t have a bike.

Now I have a bike, and I’m pretty happy with it. It took me a few rides to become comfortable with it and be able to get on and off without looking like I had no idea what I was doing (which was correct). Tonight, though, Charlie and I went for a 7.7 mile ride on the MKT Trail. I <3 the trail!

I have aspirations of doing a duathlon someday, so now I at least have a bike. And now I can tool around town without having to drive. Yay for non-motorized transportation!

I would really recommend that you take a Confident City Cycling class if you are thinking about doing some riding for transportation. I took it several years ago, and found it exceptionally helpful. It is a really fantastic class, whether you are a relative newbie (you do need to be able to ride), or whether you have a lot of experience with riding on streets. You truly will feel more confident about getting around on 2 wheels. You can find info at the PedNet website, http://www.pednet.org

Thanks! I have thought about taking the class. I may still do it, especially if I want to venture beyond the very bike-friendly route I take to get to work.
